What is ROI?
ROI, or Return on Investment, measures how much profit or loss an investment generates compared with the amount invested.
ROI Formula
ROI = (Net Profit ÷ Total Investment) × 100
Net profit is calculated by subtracting the total investment cost from the final value of the investment.
Example
Suppose you invest ₹1,00,000 and the investment grows to ₹1,25,000 with no additional costs.
Profit = ₹1,25,000 − ₹1,00,000 = ₹25,000
ROI = (₹25,000 ÷ ₹1,00,000) × 100 = 25%
Note: ROI does not account for the time period of an investment. For investments held for different periods, consider using an annualized return measure such as CAGR.
